Bates White has been named in the Global Competition Review’s (GCR) “Economics 21” for the 11th year in a row. Inclusion on this list indicates that a firm is advising clients on some of the most complex competition matters in the world.
GCR notes that Bates White worked on “several of the most scrutinized mergers and investigations” during the period June 2018–2019. The 2020 overview specifically mentions Bates White Partner Robert Marshall’s work on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the Benco Dental Supply conduct case, reporting that the judge ruled on behalf of the FTC, and Partner Nicholas Hill’s work on behalf of the Commission in the Tronox-Cristal merger, again noting that the judge in the matter sided with the FTC in his decision.
This year’s list highlights that Bates White was involved in 5 major government investigations, 35 significant litigation matters, and 13 complex mergers. Other Bates White work that GCR cites includes the firm’s analysis of the Siemens-Alstom railroad merger; an assessment for paper and packaging company KapStone of the effects of its acquisition by WestRock; expert reports on behalf of Apple in Apple Inc. v. Qualcomm, which settled one day into the trial; and work on behalf of Steward Health Care in its case against Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island before the pre-trial settlement.
The “Economics 21” ranking is a comprehensive listing of the top economic consultancy competition practices doing antitrust work around the world. This ranking is based on measures that include the size of the practice, the number of nominations to Who’s Who Legal: Competition, and work over the past year. In 2019, 10 of Bates White’s competition economists were named: B. Douglas Bernheim, Cory Capps, Eric Emch, Joseph Farrell, Randy Heeb, Leslie Marx, George Rozanski, Keith Waehrer, and Michael Whinston. Managing Partner Charles H. Mullin was named to the Who’s Who Legal list of Thought Leaders for Insurance and Reinsurance and was on the Thought Leaders-Global Elite list in 2019, as well as being the Who’s Who Legal Insurance Expert of the Year for both 2018 and 2019.
