With news of Amazon’s recently relaxed marijuana standards, GeekWire turned to Foster Garvey principal Jared Van Kirk for insight. Last week, the company announced it is backing federal legislation that would legalize marijuana and that the company will stop screening applicants for use of the drug in certain job classifications.
But as one of the nation’s largest employers, experts agree Amazon’s decision is indicative of a broader trend and may encourage others to do to the same. Van Kirk said Amazon’s decision makes sense. And he would not be surprised to see other multi-state companies follow suit. He added that this change not only expanded Amazon’s hiring pool, it also made internal management more universal.
“I wasn’t surprised at all that any employer would be open to those changes, especially a multi-state employer,” Van Kirk told GeekWire.
