Robert S. Goldsmith, co-Chair of the firm’s Redevelopment & Land Use Department, will lecture at the 2017 New Jersey Planning Conference, to be presented by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NJ) on Thursday, January 26 and Friday, January 27 at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick.  The two-day event will offer sessions targeting a comprehensive range of issues, including redevelopment, affordable housing, public policy, sustainability, practice, transportation, climate, and the environment.  In addition, the conference will inform attendees on recently accomplished and noteworthy planning activities that are underway throughout New Jersey.   

Mr. Goldsmith is a panelist for a session entitled “Getting the Most out of Redevelopment” in which the speakers will engage in a discussion of the state of redevelopment and the challenges and trends facing its use.  Topics covered will include the impact of affordable housing mandates and litigation, where the multi-family market is heading, changing retail uses and needs in mixed-use developments, the benefits and pitfalls of non-condemnation redevelopment, setting a redevelopment plan up for flexibility over time (managing the approval process with and without variance relief, amendments and plan changes) and dealing with PILOTs.  Cases, best practices and legislative ideas will be discussed.

Mr. Goldsmith's practice focuses on redevelopment, downtown and urban revitalization, transit oriented development, project financing and incentives, sustainable building initiatives and public-private partnerships. His experience encompasses counseling clients on the specialized issues in redevelopment related to parking demand, design and construction. He has broad experience in the areas of complex commercial litigation, construction litigation and appellate work. He was the recipient of the President's Award for Distinguished Leadership in Planning from APA-NJ in 2007.  He teaches courses on redevelopment law at Rutgers University School of Law, Newark and at the Kislak Real Estate Institute at Monmouth University.
