Mark H. Sobel, Chair of the firm’s Family Law Department, and Frank A. Louis, a partner in the department, will participate as speakers at the “2022 Family Law Symposium,” to be presented by the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education in cooperation with the New Jersey State Bar Association Family Law Section. The two-day program will be available via live webinar on Friday, January 28, 2022 from 2:00pm – 5:00pm, and on Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Friday’s webinar will focus on the topic of “Clearing Up Co-Habitation Confusion.” Cohabitation among couples 55 and over is on the rise. There are many reasons older couples cohabitate; it provides companionship without marital constraints, but it also comes without the legal protections that married couples have. For those who have had a prior marriage, cohabitation also raises issues regarding the suspension or termination of alimony. It is prudent for unmarried couples to sign a cohabitation agreement to protect their rights and assets, however this may not be enough. This program will address cohabitation agreements as well as other crucial consideration, including careful estate planning, beneficiary designations on retirement assets, the titling of property, and identifying who will make medical decisions on behalf of a sick partner.

Mr. Sobel concentrates his practice in litigation, primarily in the area of family law and with an emphasis on the representation of high net-worth individuals. He provides counsel across all aspects of family law, including prenuptial agreements, separation and divorce proceedings, the distribution of property and other marital assets, spousal and child support, custody and relocation. Mr. Sobel represents clients at trial, in mediations and arbitrations, and at post judgment modification and enforcement hearings. He is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He is a former chair of the NJSBA Family Law Section.
Mr. Louis concentrates his practice in the area of family law. He has over 45 years of extensive experience in negotiating and litigating economically complex divorce cases, representing clients in all aspects of divorce including asset distribution, child support and alimony. He has been broadly recognized by his peers as a preeminent member of the New Jersey family law bar. Mr. Louis is a Fellow of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is the co-author of the treatise New Jersey Family Law Volume II: Divorce, Alimony & Property Division, which was recently published by Gann Law Books.
