Jemi Goulian Lucey, a partner in and Co-Chair of the firm’s Higher Education Practice Group, will be a panelist for the presentation “How Will the Supreme Court’s Affirmative Action Ruling Affect College Admissions?” at the New Jersey State Bar Association’s 2024 Annual Meeting and Convention. The program is scheduled for Thursday, May 16 from 1:30pm – 3:00pm in Studio 4 at the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.

As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of affirmative action and its implications following the SCOTUS’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFFA) v. President & Fellows of Harvard College (Harvard) and SFFA v. University of North Carolina, this panel will discuss how those decisions affect college admissions. The decision ending race based admissions policies at colleges and universities leaves in place other forms of affirmative action like legacy preferences and early admissions. This conversation will consider how underrepresented student enrollment dropped in states that previously banned race based affirmative action, and how some have tried to increase student diversity through race neutral methods.

Ms. Lucey is a trial attorney who focuses her practice on employment, higher education, and complex litigation matters in state and federal court. She represents private and public entities, including institutions of higher learning, in employment discrimination and retaliation actions, professional negligence cases, Title IX claims, and general business disputes. She also lectures and consults on employment and human resources law and provides guidance related to litigation avoidance and the practical implications of various state and federal laws affecting employers.
