D.C. Commissioner of Insurance, Securities and Banking Larry Mirel to Join WRF’s Insurance Practice
Wiley Rein & Fielding is pleased to announce that Lawrence H. Mirel, Commissioner of Insurance, Securities and Banking for the District of Columbia, will join the firm as a partner in its well-known Insurance Practice on October 3, 2005.
An exceptional leader who has served in his current position since 1999, Mr. Mirel will spearhead the firm's insurance regulatory activities. In this capacity, he will provide clients with extensive inside-the-Beltway expertise, a sophisticated understanding of the intricacies of the insurance industry and a highly knowledgeable perspective on state insurance regulation and on the workings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
Mr. Mirel's prominent stature in the insurance community is reflective of his long and distinguished career, notable for his ability to initiate creative, thoughtful approaches to insurance regulation. He works on a wide range of major and emerging issues, including terrorism risk insurance, health insurance policy, privacy compliance, collateralization requirements for non-U.S. reinsurers, regulation of captive insurers and risk retention groups, class action and medical malpractice reform and issues of state versus federal regulation. He also frequently testifies before the U.S. Congress and D.C. legislature.
Mr. Mirel is a graduate of Oberlin College and Columbia Law School.
