Updated Contribution Limits in Georgia and Alaska

November 2021

Georgia. In September 2021, the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission approved increased contribution limits. The limits are adjusted for inflation each election cycle. Under the new limits, individuals, corporations, and PACs may contribute up to the following amounts per election cycle:

  • $7,600 per election to statewide candidates for primary and general elections;
  • $4,500 per election to statewide candidates for runoff elections;
  • $3,000 per election to other candidates for primary and general elections; and
  • $1,600 per election to other candidates for runoff elections.

The new limits take effect immediately.

Alaska. The staff of the Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) has set new contribution limits in a draft Advisory Opinion. Under the new limits, individuals may contribute up to $1,500 per calendar year to Alaska campaign committees or PACs. PACs may contribute up to $3,000 per calendar year to other PACs or party committees.

Under Alaska law, these limits take effect immediately and remain in effect unless they are overturned by the APOC Commissioners. The next meeting of the APOC Commissioners will take place in January 2022.

Georgia and Alaska are the latest states to update their contribution limits. If your organization plans to be active in the states, it is imperative that you stay on top of changes to contribution limits, registration and reporting requirements, and pay-to-play laws. Wiley is available to assist in this respect.
