Press Release

Richard E. Wiley Named Washington DC's "Leading Communications Lawyer" by Legal Times

October 25, 2007

Washington, DC - Wiley Rein's Managing partner and chair Richard E. Wiley has been recognized by his peers as the "Leading Communications Lawyer" in the Washington, DC area.

The honor was the culmination of an extensive process that began with Legal Times' selection  - based on numerous interviews with area attorneys and clients - of forty "Leading Lawyers" in four practice areas.  Legal Times then solicited votes from members of the legal community to single out one attorney in each discipline to receive this top honor.  The results of the balloting were announced by Legal Times at an October 23 awards ceremony.

Mr. Wiley heads the firm's 80-attorney communications practice, the largest in the nation.  As Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), he advocated increased competition and lessened regulation in the communications field.  Mr. Wiley played a pivotal role in the development of HDTV in this country, serving for nine years as Chairman of the FCC's Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service.  For this contribution to the next generation of television viewers, Wiley received an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and was dubbed the "Father of HDTV."

Mr. Wiley is the third Wiley Rein partner to receive top "Leading Lawyer" honors, an accolade established in 2003.  Legal Times recognized named partner as the area's "Leading Food & Drug Lawyer" in 2005 and Government Contracts Practice chair as the "Leading Government Contracts Lawyer" in 2004.  chair Thomas W. Brunner and chair James H. Wallace, Jr. also have been named among the area's select group of  "Leading Lawyers" in Insurance Law and Intellectual Property Law, respectively.
