Lee Goodman Testifies at U.S. Senate Rules Committee Hearing on S. 1, the ‘For the People Act’
Washington, DC – Wiley partner Lee E. Goodman, former Chairman and Commissioner of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), is testifying today at the U.S. Senate Rules Committee hearing on S. 1 – the “For the People Act.”
The legislation is the Senate companion to the House-passed bill known as H.R. 1, which would restructure the FEC and make significant and broad changes to federal voting, campaign finance, and lobbying laws.
Mr. Goodman’s testimony addresses provisions of the bill that would expand compulsory disclosure of political advertisements to issue messages and all online ads discussing “issues of national importance.” Mr. Goodman focuses on the new regulatory burdens and legal liabilities the bill would impose upon media companies that operate online advertising platforms.
Among the other witnesses testifying at today’s hearing are former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, former FEC Chairman Trevor Potter, and Former FEC Chairman Bradley Smith.
Mr. Goodman is testifying as a former Commissioner and Chair of the FEC, an independent regulatory agency created by Congress to administer and enforce campaign finance law.
