Wiley Obtains Preliminary Injunction On Behalf Of Idaho Republican Party To Preserve Fair Elections in Advance Of Closely-Watched Primaries

May 16, 2022

Wiley, a preeminent Washington, D.C. law firm, recently successfully represented the Idaho Republican Party in filing a complaint and motion for temporary restraining order or preliminary injunction to prevent a local Republican county committee from improperly representing that the Republican Party had officially endorsed candidates in contested primaries ahead of elections being held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

The motion asked the Fourth District Court in Ada County to stop the Bonneville County Republican Central Committee and its leadership from endorsing candidates in violation of state law and the state party rules.  It alleged the local party was disseminating false and misleading information to voters about unauthorized endorsements through direct mail, social media, and other forms of communication.

“The Idaho GOP takes care to maintain strict neutrality in contested primary elections, while providing voters with information about eligible candidates, to ensure a fair and orderly process in which both candidates and voters can be heard,” said Richard Smith, who argued the matter before the Idaho district court.

The Wiley team included partners Richard W. Smith, Thomas M. Johnson, Jr. and Jeremy J. Broggi.  Also assisting on the matter were associates William K. Lane III, Christopher White, and Ashlyn Roberts.
