Wiley Partner Scott Felder Honored with ROA ‘Twice the Citizen Award’

October 31, 2022

Wiley is pleased to announce that Government Contracts partner and retired Army Reserve Judge Advocate Lieutenant Colonel Scott A. Felder received the Reserve Organization of America’s (ROA) “Twice the Citizen Award” for representing the organization as amicus curiae in the Supreme Court case Torres v. Texas Department of Public Safety. ROA engaged Wiley to file an amicus brief in support of an Army Reserve Soldier’s challenge to Texas’ assertion of sovereign immunity from a suit for employment discrimination under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). The ROA team included Ted Howard, Lukman Azeez, George Petel, Boyd Garriott, Harsh Sancheti, and Nicole Hager.

The ROA Twice the Citizen Award goes to citizens who have shown exemplary support of ROA programs – which support military readiness of the Reserve and National Guard (the “Reserve Components”), and the care provided to Families and Veterans of Reserve Component service, according to a press release issued by the organization.

In addition to its work for ROA, Wiley filed additional amicus briefs on behalf of Professor Jeffrey M. Hirsch. Captain Torres’ victory reaffirms Veterans’ rights by ensuring that all Service members, regardless of employer or location, have a remedy for employment discrimination based on their military service. More about the briefs Wiley filed can be found here.
