Wiley’s Theodore Howard Accepts Outstanding Legal Advocacy Award From Disability Rights Maryland

September 21, 2023

Washington, DC – Wiley Rein LLP, a preeminent DC law firm, is pleased to announce that Wiley’s Pro Bono Partner, Theodore A. Howard, accepted the Outstanding Legal Advocacy Award from Disability Rights Maryland (DRM) at the organization’s  Breaking Barriers Gala in Baltimore, Maryland.

The award was in recognition of Howard’s representation of DRM for over two years in the case Disability Rights Maryland v. Prince George’s County Public Schools, where he advocated for DRM’s right to obtain records maintained by the school system that would allow it to investigate whether students of color with disabilities were subject to educational neglect and harmful and unequal disciplinary actions. In March 2023, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland ruled in favor of DRM, and established a powerful precedent that supports the network of protection and advocacy services in their investigations aimed at preventing abuse, neglect, and discriminatory practices affecting disabled citizens.

DRM praised Howard’s efforts, saying, “DRM was tremendously fortunate to work with Ted Howard on this case. His wise counsel, unparalleled expertise, collegiality, and dedication to the cause were exceptional and indispensable to securing this important victory.”

Wiley prides itself on a strong tradition of service to the local and global community and encourages its attorneys and legal assistants to participate in pro bono activities.
