Overview
In the Emergency Department (ED), patient handoffs can be a very risky time. In the May issue of ED Management, Stacey Kusterbeck’s article, “Detailed Charting on Handoffs Stops Legal Finger-Pointing,” details the errors that can occur and their consequences. Amundsen Davis's health care attorney, Edna McLain, is quoted in the story, discussing how these handoffs can result in malpractice claims. She mentions that, “Malpractice claims in this arena boil down to communication, whether between ED providers or between ED providers and other specialists.”
